Chamber Music San Francisco

celebrating PASSIONATE MUSIC... SURPRISING MUSIC... CHAMBER MUSIC!

Welcome to Chamber Music San Francisco!

In our concert series in San Francisco we present top-notch touring artists, as well as the best of the Bay Area's outstanding musicians, playing chamber music and recitals in the area's most elegant venues for this artform.

We are proud of our 2013 season's offerings – the level of musicianship is extraordinary, the repertoire is perfectly matched to the artists and each concert has something very special.

Our belief is that combining three key ingredients – superb chamber music, a willing audience, and an intimate theater – produces an exhilarating and memorable experience.

We are enthusiastic about presenting this kind of music, which is not only easy to understand but also, happily, embodies the most personal and heartfelt utterances of the great composers.

Besides presenting concerts in San Francisco since 2004, we have had one "satellite" concert series in Walnut Creek since 2007, and another on the Peninsula since 2009.  Such a concert partnership between three independent communities is unique in the United States, and opens up some remarkable possibilities for musical presentations at a high level.

Keep reading to learn more about us and how we fit into the Bay Area's musical life… and please do join us for a concert or two, or, for a real treat, subscribe to all nine programs!

Mission

Chamber Music San Francisco is dedicated to the presentation of chamber music concerts and recitals, presenting both fine musicians from the Bay Area and top quality touring artists. Beyond the presentation of excellent music, two goals will be observed:

  1. To build new audiences for chamber music, which we believe embodies the most direct and accessible communication from composer to listener. We will use innovative, informative programming as well as fresh promotional techniques to advocate this most personal of musical art forms.
  2. To provide a high-profile venue for Bay Area artists; there are many superb local performers who deserve wider exposure.

We will strive to work within the existing rich "artistic ecosystem" in the Bay Area; Chamber Music San Francisco will respect the work that others are doing in the community. Further, we will make it our job to partner with other organizations to best serve, and to increase, the chamber music-loving public.

Organization

The organization, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation, is administratively lean; revenue from ticket sales and contributed support is spent on excellent programming and promotion, rather than administrative structure.

Director's Biography

Daniel Levenstein, Director

In 1993, after working with choreographer Michael Smuin on dozens of projects (including Anything Goes on Broadway, the Geena Davis film Angie and a show for Siegfried and Roy) Mr. Levenstein co-founded Smuin Ballet and served as its Executive Director until 2001. Besides managing the operations of this $2 million arts group, he was responsible for its marketing, fundraising and touring efforts and, until 1997, was also its Music Director. In 2003 he founded Chamber Music San Francisco, which currently presents top classical artists in San Francisco, Palo Alto and Walnut Creek.

Prior to Smuin Ballet, Mr. Levenstein operated a music software and equipment distributorship, a music booking service, and a school of musical theater. He wrote and produced shows for the S.F. Conservatory of Music, the S.F. Convention & Visitors Bureau and such corporate clients as Toshiba, Seagram Classics and Silicon Graphics. He composed works performed by artists ranging from The Mommies to the Kronos Quartet, and produced soundtracks for clients including blues singers, a Charles Schulz ice show, country bands, Hartford Ballet, and a ventriloquist. Mr. Levenstein was Associate Musical Director of Beach Blanket Babylon for 13 years.
