Our History in San Francisco

MISSION: Chamber Music San Francisco is dedicated to the presentation of chamber music concerts and recitals, presenting both top quality touring artists and fine musicians from the Bay Area.

At our founding in 2003, we were aware that there was already an rich “artistic ecosystem” in the Bay Area, and as we began our activities we made it our business to respect the work that others were doing in the community. Further, we have partnered with other organizations to best serve, and to increase, the music-loving public.

In 2004 we began presenting our performances at the 300-seat Florence Gould Theatre in the Legion of Honor. Although there were some challenges with the space (notably parking, if there was a blockbust exhibition in the museum at the time) it was a very nice venue for our concerts, and we had a happy collaboration with the Fine Arts Museums. Except for special events which we staged at Herbst Theatre, the Florence Gould Theatre was our home.

However, in 2008 the Florence Gould Theatre began to become less available to outside renters, and we (along with most of the other performing arts groups whose home it was) began looking elsewhere for places to perform. By the 2009 season, our new home was the 900-seat Herbst Theatre, and there we remain.

So if you are just discovering us, please do try us for a concert or two, or, for a real treat (and a real bargain), buy the Full Series to attend all the concerts!
